Dr Dewey M.
Caron is retired Professor of Entomology & Wildlife Ecology
at the University of Delaware and is currently Affiliate Faculty,
Dept of Horticulture Oregon State University
He is a native of Vermont. He completed a BS degree in Zoology at University of Vermont and an MS in Ecology at the University of Tennessee. His PhD in Entomology is from Cornell University, where he studied honeybees under Dr Roger Morse. He was an instructor/administrative assistant in the Entomology Department at Cornell before moving to the University of Maryland (1970-1981) where he advanced from Assistant Professor to Professor.
He moved to the University of Delaware as Department Chair in 1981. After 5 years he left administration, remaining at Delaware as Professor and Extension Entomologist. He retired in 2009 and moved to Portland Oregon where he remains active with bees. He is an Affiliate Faculty member of Horticulture at Oregon State University.
During the 11 years in Maryland he was Extension Apiculturist and taught a popular beekeeping course to undergraduates. His research was on swarming management, bee pests/diseases and pollination of cucurbits and apples/pears. At Delaware his research was on pollination, bee mites, bee pests and social insect queen replacement/swarming).
In some 40 years he has published 5 books, numerous book chapters, over 70 scientific publications and over 300 popular articles on bees and insects. He contributes to many local/regional/national bee newsletters and serves as US editor for BEE CRAFT America, a new electronic venture of BEE CRAFT.
He spent 6 weeks in Wales at Bees for Development (2002) and has lectured to beekeepers in France, England, Wales and Ireland.
He has been active for 40 years in Eastern Apicultural Society (EAS) attending his first meeting in 1967. He has served as President (1986), board chair for 8 years (1991-99), and currently as EAS Foundation Chair (1999-pr). He has assisted Dr Morse in the NY Master Beekeeper certification (1978) and carried it to EAS serving as 1st Director. He revived the EAS Short Course effort (in 1979) and have organized/participated extensively in this and many other SC programs since.
He is currently President of the Western Apicultural Society and will host the 2010 conference in Oregon.

Advanced, Intermediate, Preliminary
The full FIBKA Preliminary Course is taught during the week, including two practical apiary sessions. Participants, even those with no previous beekeeping experience, may take the Preliminary examination on Friday afternoon.
Please bring protective clothing if you intend to work with bees. Protective clothing may be purchased on site if required.

Ferries from England arrive at Dublin (North Wall) and Dun Laoghaire (Dun Laoghaire to Dublin is 9 miles).
Foot passengers should travel to the Central Bus Station, Store Street, Dublin, and then by bus (Normal Service) to Gormanston. Do not use the Express Bus Service because it does not stop at Gormanston. Ask to be let down at The Huntsman Inn which is only a few hundred yards from the back entrance to the College
Take train from Connolly Station to Balbriggan Station and a taxi to Gormanston College.
Please note that the College is quite a distance from Gormanston Train Station.

Car drivers approaching from Dublin use the M1 motorway to Belfast and take Exit 7 for Julianstown/Drogheda South. Turn right just before The Huntsman Inn and proceed for about a mile. The College gates are on the right.
Gormanston is approximately 20 miles from Dublin Airport on the road to Belfast. A special bus will leave the airport for the college at 4pm Monday and a return service will leave the college at 1pm on Saturday.
Board the bus in Airport Coach Park, through the multi-story car park door under the raised canopy and out the other side.
Intending bus passengers please notify Course Convenor Gerry Ryan when making reservation.
The service bus from Dublin to Drogheda calls at the Airport. Ask to be let off at The Huntsman.
Rooms and cubicled dormitories. En-Suite rooms may be available if cancellations occur.
Only limited family accommodation available. Early booking advised because of reduced accommodation.
List of B & B accommodation in the area available from Convenor. Beekeepers opting for B & B should make reservations with Proprietor of the chosen accommodation.
