Gormanston 2017

The 2017 Annual Beekeeping Summer Course will take place at the Franciscan College, Gormanston, Co Meath from Sunday 30th of July to Friday 4th of August 2017. This will be the 71st Summer Course organised by the Federation of Irish Beekeepers’ Associations.

The Beekeeping Course which has taken place at Gormanston since 1961 is internationally renowned attracting beekeepers from all parts of the world. The range of lectures and workshops are of the highest standard. The course has universal appeal both for the beginner and the advanced enthusiast covering a wide programme in the practical and scientific areas including workshops, hive demonstrations, examinations and the National Honey Show.

The Beginners level is ideal for the novice who is interested in learning the craft of beekeeping. A person who undertakes the full beginner’s level will be well capable of managing his own hives following the course.

Following on from the success of the 2016 Summer Course, the 2017 Course will be even bigger and better with plenty of new events!

Dr Ralph Büchler

Dr. Ralph Büchler has work with honey bees since his youth. He studied agriculture and biology at Bonn University where he finished his PhD in bee science.

In 1990 he moved to the bee institute in Kirchhain which is one of the larger German training and research centers for beekeeping.

Since 1997, he is leading the institute with it’s 20 co-workers.

Honey bee selection, disease resistance and alternative varroa treatment concepts are in the focus of Dr Büchler research activities.

He acts as scientific adviser of the breeder association “Arbeitsgemeinschaft Toleranzzucht” and Vice Chair of the German association of bee research institutes.

Co. Limerick BKA beginners course

Co. Limerick BKA will be holding a beginners course in Mungret GAA Club on April 8th, 9am to 3pm and April 15th, 9am to 4pm.

Weather permitting, apiary practical demonstrations will take place on April 24th, May 2nd, 8th , 15th, 22nd.

Preliminary written exam takes place on May 27th with the practical after this.

June 5th evening practical class

Intermediate class of 2017 have agreed to mentor beginners.
